Aerospatiale (French for aerospace) was a French aircraft manufacturer created in 1970 by the merger of two major French aircraft Companies, Nord (“north”) and Sud (“south”).  It was a dominant player in French aviation manufacturing until 2000, when it merged with a German and a Spanish company to form EADS (European Aeronautic Defense and Space).  It was also a participant, together with British Aerospace and Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm, in the Airbus consortium, as EADS continues to be.
