The Beijing Aviation Institute, later called the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and now Beihang University, is located in the northwestern outskirts of the city of Beijing. In 1958 it was tasked with designing a light civil airliner. The result was the Beijing-1, flown September 24, 1958. This was an attractive, 10-passenger airliner powered by two imported Soviet engines. For some reason, only the prototype was built. It is preserved at the Beijing Air & Space Museum which is located on the campus of the university where the plane was designed.
