Ilyushin

Sergey Vladimirovich Ilyushin (1894-1977) became the namesake of the Ilyushin Design Bureau in 1935, having worked as a designer in a succession of organizations since 1926.  His firm produced the Il-2 attack aircraft, one of the most important warplanes of World War II and one of the most-produced planes of all time.  After World War II Ilyushin focused on commercial transports, bombers, and surveillance derivatives of its bombers.  Ilyushin exists today as a division of the unified Russian aircraft industry.
