Macchi and Aermacchi

Giulio Macchi (1866-1935) was an Italian aircraft designer who started Aeronautica Macchi in Varese, Italy, in 1912.  The company produced license-built Nieuport aircraft and elegant small seaplanes of its own design during World War I and became a prominent producer of Italian military and civil aircraft through the 1930s and World War II.  In the 1960s, the company rebranded itself Aermacchi and continues to be an important aerospace firm to this day.
