SIAI Marchetti or Savoia Marchetti was an Italian aircraft company formed from the merger of three preexisting companies. SIAI (Società Idrovolanti Alta Italia or Northern Italy Seaplane Company) was a seaplane maker founded in 1915. Umberto Savoia was an Italian seaplane designer who founded his company, Savoia, also in 1915. These two companies merged shortly after World War I, and later added the name of Alessandro Marchetti, who had joined the firm as chief designer. Savoia Marchetti, as it was known in the 1920s and 1930s, designed successful and elegant flying boats for civil and military use, and branched into land-based airliners and military aircraft shortly before and during World War II. After the war, the revivied SIAI-Marchetti company manufactured a diverse array of airplanes and helicopters until its purchase by Agusta in 1983.
